Transfer procedures for
international students
A student in F-1 or J-1 status may transfer to a different school
before or after completion of a program at the current school. To be
eligible for transfer a student must maintain status at all times and
follow the transfer procedures as prescribed by INS and USIA.
Steps to follow when applying for
transfer:
- Get accepted to a different school
- Inform the school you are currently attending of your
intention to transfer to Virginia Tech
- After you complete all requirements for admission (including
submittin a current financial certification form and the transfer
form completed and signed by your Foreign Student Advisor), you
will be issued a new I-20 or IAP-66 form by Virginia Tech. F-1
students will receive both the School and the Student Copy of the
I-20. The IAP-66 form for J-1 students will be mailed to the
previous sponsor (school) for release information and
endorsement.
F-1 students:
- Complete item 11 of the I-20 form (sign and print your name
and date) and submit the form in person to the International
Student Support Office of Virginia Tech in 214 Sandy Hall within
15 days of beginning attendance. The completion of transfer
will be noted on the back of the Student Copy of the I-20 form.
The school copy will be submitted to the INS Data Processing
Center within 30 days of receipt from you.
J-1 students:
- After the IAP-66 form is returned to Virginia Tech with the
release information from your previous sponsor, you will be given
your (pink) copy of the new IAP-66 form. The yellow copy will be
submitted to USIA for notification purposes.
Enroll in Virginia Tech in the first term
available after leaving your previous school, or the first term after
vacation (if you plan to enroll in the fall semester. It is essential
that you follow these procedures in order to maintain your legal
non-immigrant status in the U.S.
